The story follows Lloyd Bourdelle (Walter Matthau), a struggling horse trainer in Louisiana raising three sons. His youngest, Casey, has a deep love for horses, especially a colt they raise named Casey’s Shadow. Despite financial hardships, Lloyd and his boys train the colt with hopes of competing in the prestigious All American Futurity, one of the biggest quarter horse races in the U.S.
