May Canady is a socially awkward young woman who has struggled with loneliness her entire life. She grew up with a lazy eye and had few friends—her only consistent companion being a creepy porcelain doll named Suzie, gifted by her overbearing mother.

As an adult, May works as a veterinary assistant. She becomes obsessed with finding someone who is “perfect.” When she meets Adam (Jeremy Sisto), a mechanic with “beautiful hands,” she imagines they can form a meaningful connection. But May’s emotional instability and awkwardness drive people away.

After a series of rejections and breakdowns—including with her flirtatious co-worker Polly (Anna Faris)—May’s loneliness festers into madness. She eventually decides that if she can’t find a perfect friend, she’ll make one—by assembling body parts from people she admires.
