Set in North Carolina's 14th congressional district, the film follows incumbent Democratic Congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell), who has run unopposed for years. His campaign is derailed after a scandal involving a lewd voicemail. Two wealthy CEOs, Glenn and Wade Motch (Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow), decide to install a new candidate to gain influence over the district. They back Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), a naive tourism director with no political experience.
With the help of a ruthless campaign manager, Tim Wattley (Dylan McDermott), Marty is transformed into a viable contender. The ensuing election becomes a chaotic battle of dirty tricks, personal attacks, and escalating absurdity. Ultimately, Marty exposes the Motch brothers' plans to exploit the district for profit, leading to a change in leadership.
