Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank), a former Christian missionary turned skeptic, now investigates and debunks alleged religious miracles. Haunted by the death of her husband and daughter during a mission in Sudan, she has lost her faith in God.

She is called to the small town of Haven, Louisiana, where a series of bizarre events that mirror the Ten Biblical Plagues of Egypt are occurring. The river has turned to blood, frogs infest the land, cattle die mysteriously, and boils appear on townspeople. The locals believe a young girl named Loren McConnell (AnnaSophia Robb) is responsible.

Katherine investigates scientifically, but the supernatural events become increasingly inexplicable. As more plagues strike, she begins to question her skepticism. Her partner, Ben (Idris Elba), assists but becomes suspicious of the townspeople’s intentions.

Eventually, Katherine uncovers that the town harbors a dark satanic cult that orchestrated these events in an attempt to bring about the Antichrist. They had targeted Loren as a vessel of evil—but the twist reveals Loren is actually a force of good, sent to stop the cult.

Katherine regains her faith and protects Loren, but not before realizing that she is miraculously pregnant—implied to be with a divine child, continuing the theme of religious mystery.
