Claire Spencer (Michelle Pfeiffer), a former cellist, lives in a lakeside Vermont house with her husband, Dr. Norman Spencer (Harrison Ford), a successful university scientist. After her daughter leaves for college, Claire begins to experience strange and terrifying events: doors opening on their own, voices whispering, and visions of a ghostly woman.
Initially dismissed as trauma from a recent car accident, Claire's fears intensify. She becomes convinced that the house is haunted and starts investigating. Her digging leads her to discover a local missing person case—Madison Elizabeth Frank, a young student who disappeared a year earlier and had an affair with Norman.
As the truth unravels, Claire realizes that Madison was murdered—and the ghost haunting her is Madison herself, seeking justice. Norman eventually confesses to the affair and the murder, but tries to silence Claire permanently to cover his crimes.
